Turkey to retaliate if the US applies CAATSA sanctions on Turkey: FM

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu said on Friday that Ankara is ready to respond to Washington if sanctions are imposed due to the acquisition of Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems, the head of the Turkish foreign ministry announced at a meeting with the editors of the Anatolian Agency.

“If the US starts to take negative measures, then we have to take reciprocal steps. America made a number of decisions, we do not intend to remain silent. If there is a negative attitude towards us, then we will come up with a similar answer,” the minister said.

Turkey is resolute in the acquisition of the S-400 and does not intend to abandon them, Cavusoglu said.

“On the S-400 issue, we are determined not to intend to retreat. We needed to satisfy our need for such systems, and we did it with Russia,” he stressed.

“Let us know your concerns, let's set up a working group, including NATO,” Turkish Foreign Minister called on the U.S.

“The S-400s that we will receive will be 100% under our control,” he stressed.

“Why does an ally cause so much trouble when we buy a defense system as if we've built nuclear weapons?” the minister asked.

“We're committed, we can't back down,” he added.

“If we don't get Patriot tomorrow, we'll have another systems,” Cavusoglu said.

“France wants to give SAMP/T, which is a positive step,” the minister stated after his meeting with the French foreign minister yesterday in Ankara.

“No matter what the consequences are, it is not possible that we will give up,” he reiterated.

“In our most needed period, Patriot batteries were withdrawn from Turkey. If there's an attack on us, NATO has no protection capacity,” the Turkish FM added.

“If the US takes negative steps over CAATSA, we will have to do something in return,” he said.

“Not only us, but also Europe is uncomfortable with such approaches of the U.S,” he added.

“We will continue our determination to become an independent and free nation,” Cavusoglu concluded.

Turkey is working on its own counter- measures against anticipated U.S. sanctions over the purchase of the S-400 Russian missile defense system, a senior Turkish official said on condition of anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the matter.

Turkey is analyzing products imported from and exported to the U.S. as part of its possible response, the official said to Bloomberg.
