The leader of the main opposition of Turkey, Republican People’s Party of Turkey (CHP), Kemal Kılıcdaroglu, supported Ankara’s purchase of Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems, Anadolu news agency reported on Saturday.

Earlier, the Turkish Defense Ministry announced the beginning of deliveries of S-400 to Turkey.

"When the request of Turkey to acquire (US air defense system) Patriot did not find an answer, of course, Turkey will look for other ways to ensure its security, and she will continue to do so - that is her right. Let the Senate see where Turkey is, its strategic position in the region. It’s a necessity to ensure its security inside and outside the country, and it is obliged to take measures, “ said Kılıcdaroglu, commenting on the acquisition of the S-400 air defense system by Ankara.

The contract for the supply of four S-400 divisions worth $ 2.5 billion was concluded in 2017.

Turkey will pay part of the deal on S-400 itself, part of it will be paid for with a Russian loan.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Yuri Borisov, the contract provides for an option after the main part of the delivery is completed.

The purchase of the latest Russian air defense systems, the S-400, provoked an international scandal between Turkey and the United States: the States demanded that the deal to be abandoned and their Patriot complexes be purchased in exchange.

In case of refusal, Washington did not rule out the possibility of delaying or canceling the sale of Turkey’s newest F-35 fighters at all, but Turkey refused to make concessions.

However, after the summit of G20 leaders in Osaka, the situation between the United States and Turkey became less tense, said Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu.
