Italy proposes $ 6,000 fine against migrants rescuers

The Italian government plans to penalize non-governmental relief organizations for each immigrant, for saving them from Mediterranean waters and then bringing them to Italian territory.

The fines for each migrant will range from 3,500 to 5500 euros (about 6,000 dollars).

Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said this is a declaration of war against it, which seeks to save lives at sea, the Guardian newspaper reported .

The newspaper said that the matter will be submitted to the Council of Ministers within days, before being put to the Italian parliament to vote, and includes the proposed decree suspension of the license granted to relief organizations, for a period of one month and a year.

The MSF had to pay 440 million euros for the 80,000 migrants it had saved in the Mediterranean over the past three years, a figure far beyond its potential.
