Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has threatened to impose economic sanctions on Turkey if Ankara continues to explore gas fields in the eastern Mediterranean.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has threatened to take tough financial measures against Ankara if it continues its policy of exploratory oil fields in the eastern Mediterranean, the agency Euronews reported.

"If Turkey continues to follow its current strategy, financial measures can be taken and economic sanctions imposed,” Tsipras said in an interview with the information agency Alpha .

"Turkey must abandon these steps and show respect for international law and agreements,” he said.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Monday that his country could begin this autumn with exploratory excavations of hydrocarbons on the northern Cyprus shelf.
