France confesses Javelin missiles found in Libya were bought from the US

The French Defense Ministry said that the javelin missiles found in Libya were supposed to be used by a French counterterrorism unit in Libya.

The French military said on Wednesday that the French government had purchased the Javelin missiles found at a base of fighters in Libya from the United States, but the aim was not to sell or transfer them to any party in the Libyan conflict, Reuters reported.

In a statement sent to reporters, the ministry said the rockets were aimed at "self-protection of a French military unit sent to carry out counter-terrorism operations."

"The weapons were damaged and unusable and were temporarily stored in a warehouse in preparation for their destruction,” the ministry said.

Earlier, the New York Times reported that Libyan government troops found four Javelin anti-tank rockets last month during a raid on a militant camp in the mountainous town of Gharyan, south of Tripoli.
