40 million tourists visited Turkey in the first 10 months of 2019 according to latest figures

Assassinations, coup attempts, terrorist attacks and many other sensational events which have occured in recent years caused a heavy blow to one of Turkey’s biggest sectors, Tourism…

Especially after the military coup attempt in 2016 by the followers of U.S.-based Feytullah Gulen, the number of tourists entering the country decreased by 30% compared to previous year. In 2015 Turkey’s tourism revenue was 31.5 billion dollars, in 2016 this figure had fallen to $22 billion. The number of foreign tourists who visited Turkey in 2015 was approximately 36 million, but in 2016 this number had fallen to 25 million.

The unstable situation in Turkey, harmed the country’s Tourism sector badly, figures show.

Another important development in 2016 was the start of Turkish offensive called ‘Euphrates Shield’ against ISIS in Northern Syria. ISIS had captured a large portion of land in Northern Syria near the Turkish border. Turkey and the Turkish backed Free Syrian Army cleared an area of thousands of kilometers in Northern Syria from ISIS. Some countries applauded Turkey for its efforts against ISIS back then, some others called it the ‘violation of Syrian territory’.

In 2016 Turkey not only faced a coup attempt but also nearly 17 terrorist attacks carried out against both civilians and security forces in the country by different organizations such as ISIS and PKK.

These developments, without doubt, led to serious wounds for the country’s tourism sector.

However, after the re-allocation of the stability in 2017, tourism statistics began to show improvement. In 2017, tourism figures increased following different studies carried out by the the Ministry of Tourism.

As a result, in 2017, the number of tourists visiting the country increased 27% compared to 2016. At the same time, tourism revenue increased by $ 4 billion in 2017, compared to 2016. The number of tourists entering the country, after a one ‘nightmarish’ year, was able to show an increase of nearly 7 million.

In 2018, this number increased by another 7 million and reached 40 million. The number of foreign tourists visiting the country increased by 21.8% compared to 2017. It seems, as the country has recovered from its wounds, statistics show that the recovery is reflected in Tourism too.

According to the latest figures, 40 million 719 thousand foreign tourists visited Turkey in the first 10 months of 2019. This marks an increase of 14.47% compared to the same period of the year 2018.
